Cheesy Potatoes

Well, we call them Lake Travis Potatoes. These superbly creamy Cheesy Potatoes were introduced to us by our best friends on a weekend at the lake. We have enjoyed coming to visit them at their house on Lake Travis for many years now. And many years ago they popped these in their oven. It was love at first bite. So cheesy and creamy with a little bite to them. They still live there and we still enjoy making and enjoying this side dish. After a day on the lake it is a comforting dish along with our steaks and/or BBQ chicken.

We have taken it to our friends and family over the years and now every time it is a request. This is not for those days when your on a diet!

Well, lets get cooking Cheesy Potatoes!

cheesy potatoes

Here’s the original recipe:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup or chicken
  • 1 original jar of Cheez Whiz
  • 1 jar jalapeno Cheez Whiz
  • 1 8oz sour cream
  • 1 16oz bag of hash browned potatoes (cubed or shredded)

My husband is my cook and he likes to change things up a bit. He’s been known to use Velveeta cheese and fresh jalapenos with a little onion. On occasion we’ll add some bacon bits on top too.

Cheesy Potato Goodness

Melting it all together except for the hash browns in the microwave gives it the blended goodness you are looking for. Spray 8×9 baking dish with your favorite non stick spray. Place hash browns in baking dish and pour melted mixture on top. Bake for one hour on 350 degrees. Definitely want the cheese just a golden brown.

Lake Travis Potatoes

So Lake Travis Potatoes started out in an old Betty Crocker cookbook and it was called Company Potatoes and has fed us many times after a day of skiing, tubing and wakeboarding on the lake. As we are not in the shape we used to be back then we now just float on the water on a pontoon boat and maybe a little tubing. Have a few drinks or a bottle of Fine Wine and get back to a dinner with good conversation and a few games of pool. You can pair these Cheesy Potatoes with either beef or steak so it’s your choice on the wine preference. I prefer to pair mine with the steak and potato option and a nice Cabernet or Merlot.
